About

About the fellowship.

This two year fellowship encourages a public health and human rights approach to the practice of emergency medicine, both domestically and globally. Through clinical rotations, in-house tutorials, certificate and online courses, independent projects, and field work, we accomplish training our fellows to develop the adult and pediatric clinical skills. With this, our fellows develop the knowledge necessary to address the global impact

of 1) emergency medicine: acute manifestations of non communicable, chronic illnesses, in addition to other common illnesses, injuries, and refugee work, 2) infectious diseases: HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, tropical

and emerging infectious diseases, 3) acute and chronic diseases, violence and injuries presenting to

emergency rooms in resource limited settings, and 4) international travelers seeking pre/post travel medical

care. The fellowship fosters a collaboration with our partners for capacity building through training and education in the EM clinical practice and research.

Recent trends in global mortality and morbidity reflect the  evolving,

diverse and densely populated urbanization of all societies. There is now almost universal recognition of the need for Emergency Medicine to provide the medical

care services for acute illnesses and injuries in working toward meeting the

Millennium Development goals. We also recognize the expanding challenge and burden of chronic illnesses as a cause of morbidity and mortality.

Among the acute illnesses, old and emerging infectious diseases still represent

a large share of emergency medicine’s patient encounters, especially in developing countries. Our focus is mainly on training physicians to develop the clinical skills

and knowledge base necessary to address the global impact of infectious diseases    – HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, as well as other common and emerging infectious diseases – in children and adults in and from developing countries and international travelers seeking pre/post travel medical care.
